The Day My Girl Used The 'F' Bomb

Our kids go to a public school....it was bound to happen. (Actually, I don't think it matters WHAT school they go to) Yesterday, Delaney wanted to listen to my iPod. She knows that before each song, she has to bring it to me and ask if she can listen to it or not....I have a few on there that are just for me when I run (Thank you Sexyback for helping me get thin!!). Anyway, she happens to really like 'Green Day' singing 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'....but Calvin said he heard a bad word on there so she couldn't listen to it (I didn't hear it but now I'll listen for it). Avery was privy to this whole conversation and she asked which word it was. Calvin just told her it was a bad one. Then she asked, 'Was it the 'F' word?' Now, the last time Avery asked us about the 'F' word, we asked her what is was and she said 'FAT'. The 'S' word is 'Stupid' and the 'C' word is 'Crap'. Anyway, Calvin says..'well, what is the 'F' word Ave?' She says, without blinking. 'F**K'. WHAT??? WHAT????

I was on the computer and literally doubled over and turned around with a shocked look on my face...Calvin didn't even flinch and mouthed to me 'CALM DOWN!!!' He asked Ave where she heard that word and she told him that her, Delaney and a couple of other friends saw it on a door at school and sounded it out. Then after they all had said it, someone told them it was a bad word. Here is the difference between our girls...Delaney was already crying because she knew she shouldn't have said it. Avery wanted to know what it meant. Ok, so I'm trying to regain my composure...I went into my room to pray for a second. Seriously, this threw me for a loop. Not because I have never said it (SORRY but it's true) but because I didn't want that word in my baby's head! It was like a loss of innocence for me...our girls have never heard that word here and if they have ever heard it 'out there' they wouldn't know it was bad...but now they do.

A few minutes later, we were done chatting about it, and we were playing 'Cadoo'. Calvin had the sports channel on TV but it was muted, and while the highlights were playing, the 'Bucks' (a basketball team) came on the screen. Avery looked over and said to her dad, 'Dad, if you change that 'B' to an 'F', their team would be a BAD WORD. She had a little glimmer in her eye like she had beaten the system. Like she now KNEW something. ARG!!!! Calvin had a hard time keeping a straight face....I had a hard time blinking back my tears.

We put the kids to bed, prayed, did all the good parent stuff...but I was still so sad. Calvin finally had to remind me that it is just a word. A word. We can give it power or not. So, today, I will try not to be sad that my 6 year old dropped the 'F bomb' in my living room.
